Commodity flows

How are goods transported in Sweden? Trafikanalys' official statistics show the country's commodity flows for industries that are significant transport buyers. It describes which commodities were transported, to what extent and which types of transport modes were used in the transport chain. The survey is an important source of knowledge about goods transport both within and outside the country.

In the Commodity Flow Survey (CFS) there are links to the business structure and the industries and commodity owners in Sweden that generate a demand for transporting different commodity groups. CFS is a complement to other freight transport statistics.

Based on the transport policy targets, the CFS contributes with knowledge about the freight transport system. The data from CFS constitute, among other things, a prerequisite for the Swedish Transport Administration's publications of current transport forecasts.

The survey constitutes official statistics and is used for:

  • to describe how different product groups are transported
  • to describe which traffic type chains are used for goods transport domestically and abroad
  • to model and forecast freight flows within Sweden and between Sweden and abroad
  • analysis in the transport system.

The flow of goods is measured and reported in the form of goods quantities in tonnes and goods values ​​in Swedish kronor.


Scope of the survey

The survey is based on quarterly samplings of a total of some 12,000 workplaces within the mining and quarrying industries, manufacturing industries, wholesalers and e-commerce businesses. Data from administrative materials and central company registers in areas such as agriculture and forestry are used with respect to commodities such as round woods, grains and sugar beets for industries in which it is considered feasible to do so.

Publication

The Commodity Flow Survey has been conducted five times on a full-scale level. Transport analysis works continuously to try to meet requests for improvements, among other things, by evaluating previous commodity flow surveys.
