Regional scheduled public transport

Statistics relating to regional scheduled public transport, both publicly financed and commercial traffic.

          Logotype Official Statistics of Sweden

The purpose of the statistics is to elucidate both publicly financed and commercial traffic. Public transport authorities (PTA) provide scheduled public transport in their respective counties as per PSO regulation (EC) no.1370/2007. After a notification to the PTA, commercial operators can also offer their regional public transport services to the public.

The statistics contains information about the numbers of trips made (boardings), passenger kilometres, service offerings (vehicle kilometres and seat kilometres) and the financing of the operations (only for PSO traffic). It is divided by type of finance and county (only data from PTA).

Travel in regional scheduled public transport decreased slightly in 2025

In 2025, close to 1.5 billion trips were made in publicly financed regional scheduled public transport. This is a decrease of 1.3 percent compared with 2024, and it is the first year since the pandemic in which travel has not continued to increase.

Travel is still at a lower level than in 2019. Total passenger kilometres for all trips made, however, remained largely unchanged compared with the previous year.

The scope of the survey

The PTAs in all counties are asked once per year to provide information, broken down by mode of transport, on the services offered, finances, numbers of trips and passenger kilometres. The survey has been conducted since the mid-1980s under the auspices of the Swedish Public Transport Association. The survey was conducted by the Swedish Institute for Transport and Communications Analysis (SIKA) from 2004 to 2009.

In addition, commercial operators in regional public transport (road and water transports) are asked to provide information on the services offered, numbers of trips and passenger kilometres. The collection of information about regional public transport by rail are coordinated with Transport Analysis survey Rail Traffic.

Publication

The statistics is published once a year (June) and are available in Excel reports. All users are recommended to use the latest available report as revised figures are not updated in previous publications.
