Train performance

Statistics relating to passenger railway vehicles on-time performance.

          Logotype Official Statistics of Sweden

The statistics contains information about passenger trains. Number of scheduled, supplemented and cancelled trains are presented as well as number of trains on time respective delayed. The statistics pertain to conditions at the terminus stations.

The key variable in the statistical content is the Combined Performance Measure (CPM). CPM corresponds to the proportion of scheduled trains that have arrived on time. In other words, on-time performance (punctuality) is weighed against the total number of trains run (regularity) to generate a single performance measure. Users of the statistics are afforded some freedom to determine for themselves when a train is to be considered on-time, in that a number of different time margins are presented.

Our hope is that these statistics will serve as useful documentation for anyone interested in tracing the evolution of on-time train performance. Because feedback from users of the statistics is important to Transport Analysis, we welcome your viewpoints on the scope and content of the statistics.

Scope of the survey

The survey covers passenger trains on Swedish rail systems, with the exception of trains on the Swedish lines Saltsjöbanan and Roslagsbanan.

For reasons for confidentiality, no data are reported per operator or train station. Most of the data are aggregated for all of Sweden, or for various categories of trains.

Publications

Preliminary statistics are published quarterly; the production time is roughly one month. The annual statistics are published about two months after year-end and contains more detailed statistics.

Publications are available in pdf and Excel formats. The Excel version includes an extended history that dates back to, at most, 2013. Click on the plus sign above the first year to see more. All users are recommended to use the latest available report as revised figures are not updated in previous publications.
